University of Santo Tomas - 2005

When one talks of Espana Blvd., one landmark will immediately come to mind: the University of Santo Tomas.  And when one talks of UST, a lot of things come to mind: old at 395 nestled on a sprawling historical campus, quality Catholic education, Papal visits, countless alumni that include Jose Rizal, Apolinario Mabini and Alfredo Velayo  of SGV, topnotchers in board examinations, the Growling Tigers of UAAP, and a host of other things, including a well-known hospital that also bears the University name.  Indeed, the University of Santo Tomas is all these, and a whole lot more.  It spells of excellence as manifested by the awards and recognitions it has received from government and accrediting bodies for the high quality education it offers.  As a matter of fact, UST has been granted full autonomy by the CHED due to the excellence of its flagship programs.  Looking back at its historical past, one encounters the name Miguel de Benavides, O.P., the third Archbishop of Manila who initiated the establishment of the institution by bequeathing his modest personal funds and his personal library collection on July 24, 1605, two days before his death.  On April 28, 1611, UST was formally established as a "seminary-college".  This marked the tertiary education in the Philippines.  Today, 395 years, 18 colleges and 33,000 students later, the Pontifical and Royal Catholic University of Santo Tomas once again proves that quality education is its trademark, with the PQA for Proficiency in Quality Management bestowed upon it.

Anticipating its fourth centennial in 2011, UST continues to provide Filipino with the characteristic quality Catholic education that it has been known for.  It will expand beyond Espana and extend to the South-the southern part of Luzon in Laguna (Sta.Rosa Campus) and the Southern part of Mindanao in General Santos City (Gen. Santos Campus).  It will bring to the new campuses the same Thomasian identity of competence, compassion and commitment.  Utilizing an updated IT infrastructure to support e-learning and other innovative services, UST will be able to hurdle its next 400 years in the same level of excellence that it had as it served the country from 1611 to this day.

The vision of CMZ is a hospital with performance excellence that is nationally recognized. Its missions are: 1) To provide integrated value-based healthcare services; 2) To provide highly competent staff; and 3) To pursue a corporate social responsibility program. CMZ embraces the cores values of C-ompetence, I-ntegrity, U-nity, D-ynamism, A-ccountability and D-riven by Results

Since 2009, CMZ has been using the standards of the Baldrige Health Care Criteria for Performance Excellence with the objective of continually improving its quality management system. CMZ takes pride as the first and only hospital that received the Center of Quality hospital accreditation in Region IX from PhilHealth last 2011; and this 2014, as a recipient of the Philippine Quality Award for Commitment to Quality Management conferred by no less than the President of the Republic of the Philippines, His Excellency Benigno S. Staying true to its mission to provide integrated value-based healthcare services, CMZ has been pro-active and has taken the lead in the acquisition of state-of-the-art technology to complement healthcare services. In 2005, CMZ was the first to acquire the dual-slice CT Scan in the Zamboanga Peninsula and in July 2013, it upgraded its CT Scan to the 64-slice Siemens Somatom Perspective, which incidentally, is the first of the Perspective series in Southeast Asia. This advocacy of CMZ is relied upon by its many partners, including the Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines (JSOTF-P) which has since made CMZ as its healthcare provider. CMZ attributes its dynamism to its more than 500 strong workforce and physicians. As of December 2012, the physician group is composed of 53 active consultants and 162 visiting consultants distributed among the different medical specialities.

During the Zamboanga Siege in September 2013, CMZ manifested the true spirit of volunteerism and passion in supporting its workforce and community as well as its partners from the Armed Forces of the Philippines for their patients with severe injuries. CMZ remained steadfast in this adversity mostly because of the systems and preparedness measures based on the PQA and Balrige Criteria. Corporate Social Responsibility is one of CMZ’s core competencies with Breast Wellness Center as its flagship program. It conducts lectures even outside CMZ and spearheads advocacy campaign in an effort to share to the community the importance of early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment to save more lives. As part of its societal contribution, CMZ (ZPHI) is the second highest corporate taxpayer in Zamboanga City in 2011, and is the only hospital that has affiliated with the local chamber of commerce to help in the setting of economic agenda for the city.

Don Bosco Technical College - 2012

Don Bosco Technical College stands on 3.5-hectare lot at 736 General Kalentong Street, Mandaluyong City, historic and hallowed grounds. The 18th century Spanish building (1716) at the heart of the campus is a testimony to events that led to the 1896 uprising of the country’s patriots, the Katipuneros, against the Spanish colonizer.

St. John Bosco, the 19th century priest who founded the Salesians during Italy’s industrial revolution, stands out in the history of the Church as the “Father and Teacher of Youth” who has able to inspire youth in their teens and twenties to become saints. The Profile of the Ideal Salesian Education presents an explicit understanding of the distinctive nature of a Don Bosco education. There are many ways in which Don Bosco schools and training centers resemble other kinds of Catholic education. But this profile emphasizes the essential characteristics and basic options of Salesian education. It is not borne out of an elitist complex, but is simply a logical consequence of the fact that Don Bosco schools and training centers live and operate within a particular charism in the Church.Salesian education offers the Preventive System, “based entirely on reason, religion and loving kindness,” as its main original contribution to the cause of education. The Salesians of Don Bosco, as guarantors of the Salesian ethos of the school and training center (GC 24, 27), are committed to the reformulation of the preventive system as an ongoing task in the light of the youth condition and culture of the present day.

Our core competency is “technology with a soul’’, technical education with spiritual formation. The students, through the Salesian Youth Movement and the Volunteer Movement, commit themselves in various ways to animation for the benefit of their peers. Salesian education forms the youth as servant-leaders, creating an environment for them to be empowered and to be responsible for themselves and others. There are Student Professional Organizations, Students Religious/Pastoral Organizations, Students Socio-Cultural / Interest-Oriented Organizations that enhance the development of a character of a servant-leader.

The students, through the technical curriculum, acquire relevant skills, develop the requisite discipline and responsibility, become self-reliant, and increase their employability and productivity. Don Bosco schools are equated with state-of-the-art quality technical education. The commitment of Don Bosco to technical education makes the Salesian schools a very relevant partner in the education of the Philippine youth. For the last fifty years, Don Bosco schools in this country have been teaching the Filipino youth skills in mechanics, electronics, automotive, industrial drafting welding, wood-work and others, particularly through the training centers. In addition, Don Bosco offers courses in Mechanical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Computer and Electrical technology; construction, furniture-making and agro-mechanics; as well as college courses in Engineering.Salesian education offers the Preventive System, “based entirely on reason, religion and loving kindness,” as its main original contribution to the cause of education. The Salesians of Don Bosco, as guarantors of the Salesian ethos of the school and training center (GC 24, 27), are committed to the reformulation of the preventive system as an ongoing task in the light of the youth condition and culture of the present day

In Don Bosco schools, the development of moral and Christian values goes hand in hand withtraining in the manual and technical skills. Religion will teach the young how to live and their technical education will teach them how to earn their dailybread.
